Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels Expansion
Forza Horizon 5 has taken the racing world by storm. It’s simply the biggest and best looking racing game in history, with an incredible wealth of content. Forza Horizon 5’s location is Mexico, a beautiful and diverse place filled with beaches, forests, cities, monuments, ruins…oh, and a huge volcano! With so much to offer, how could the team at Playground Games step up their efforts with the first of their next two expansion packs? The response was brilliant. Hot wheels. One of the most iconic toys introduced to the world of Forza Horizon. This isn’t the first time the Forza Horizon franchise has had a Hot Wheels expansion, but that shouldn’t matter – the content in the Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels expansion is pretty amazing.
The Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels expansion can only be accessed from the Forza Horizon 5 map. You will need to go to the designated Hot Wheels location in the northern Mexico region. From there, you’ll be whisked away, via the loading screen, to a whole new region high in the sky. Yes, a real Hot Wheels floating park. Three major regions are linked together by dozens and dozens of iconic orange racing tracks. You’ll see all kinds of loops, curves, jumps and more, all inspired by Hot Wheels playsets. Each region has a distinct look, from icy caverns surrounding a smoldering volcano to a vast forest region. After hours of gameplay, I guarantee you’ll always find new routes, areas, and details throughout.
From rookie to legendary
Upon arrival, you will be tasked with completing various challenges to earn stars. Earn enough stars and you will rank up. There are five rows in total; Beginner, Pro, Expert, Elite and Legend. Each rank will unlock a new class of vehicles, expanding your own personal collection of Hot Wheels cars. The Rookie row is designed to give a feel of Hot Wheels Park, a way to really make it easier for racers to get in. By the time you reach Expert rank, you’ll experience blistering speeds against fearsome foes.
There’s a lot to see and explore in the Hot Wheels expansion. They’ve even included special story races that have you racing while telling you the story of Hot Wheels. Learning how Hot Wheels came to be, the first cars, the reasoning behind the orange tracks, and so much more added a layer of depth that I really enjoyed. Of course, another amazing feature is the ability to use these awesome unlockable Hot Wheels cars in the main game.
Hot wheel issues
The Hot Wheels expansion isn’t without its issues. The first problem you will encounter is simply the difficulty of getting around. While Mexico is mostly a wide open area, allowing racers to really drive anywhere, in Hot Wheels you’re often limited to following the tracks. It makes for a more authentic experience, but I often found myself spending a lot of time driving between challenges. Over time you will learn the fastest routes. And, there’s a Fast Travel option – but what’s the fun?
The second problem you will encounter is a bit more pressing. AI Drivatars often have trouble navigating certain aspects of the tracks. You will be driving and it will not be uncommon to come across a few cars moving very slowly, or even at a standstill, along the tracks. It certainly doesn’t seem on purpose. They seem really confused. This can be frustrating as they will often get in the way and cause annoying collisions. I didn’t notice this much during the actual races, so it’s not too bad.
One of my favorite aspects of Forza Horizon, in general, is how they show mini leaderboards whenever you complete various tasks, such as finding new routes, hitting new billboards, and more. This creates a constant source of competition between friends or people who follow you. I’m Xbox Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, so from time to time his Gamertag will show up on the leaderboards. “Hey, I just found more roads in Hot Wheels than Phil found!”. It’s a small detail, but it’s one that adds a fun and competitive element.
Build your own track
The Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels expansion expands on existing creation features, allowing players to design their own Hot Wheels-inspired courses. This includes adding the iconic orange tracks, loop loops, jumps and more. And if you’re not feeling the creative buzz, you can race on courses created by fans around the world. It’s yet another way Forza Horizon 5 and this Hot Wheels expansion add an almost endless amount of content to enjoy.
The Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels expansion is really easy to recommend if you love Forza Horizon 5. It adds a whole new Hot Wheels themed region and 10 new Hot Wheels cars that you can earn for your collection. You’ll have hours of play in the Hot Wheels park, from ranking to legend status to developing your own tracks in the creator. It’s worth noting that this Hot Wheels expansion is also a little nicer than the recently released Hot Wheels Unleashed game, which makes me wonder… when Playground Games is done exploring the world of Fable, maybe they’ll should be charged a full on Hot Wheels game. Either way, I would highly recommend the Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels expansion.
